The United Way of Lee County believes health is strongly linked to education and income. Good health allows children to learn better and allows adults to increase their income through productive work. Conversely, health problems often lead to increased school absences among children, as well as increased on-the-job absences by adults. That is why we are committed to increasing access to healthcare and providing health services to Senior Citizens and those with disabilities through our support of the following organizations:
Alabama Head Injury FoundationAlabama Head Injury Foundation works across the state with survivors of traumatic brain injury and with their families to help them achieve the highest level of independent living possible. The majority of its clients tend to be those with more severe injuries, which often means living under the care of a family member serving as a 24/7 caregiver. AHIF’s primary services include support groups, a camp experience, financial counseling, housing assistance, home modifications and respite care for caregivers. East Alabama Services for the ElderlyEast Alabama Services for the Elderly promotes the general welfare of seniors and disabled individuals in Lee County and surrounding communities. Through this mission, EASE works to promote public awareness of the aging process and the obstacles that seniors regularly face. EASE provides health, nutrition and everyday living resources to improve this target population’s quality of life. EASE provides in-home services such as light housekeeping, personal care, companion care and transportation for seniors and disabled who are at risk of nursing home placement. It also manages two senior volunteer programs. One program places senior mentors and tutors in our school systems to aide children with special needs, while the other program helps seniors reinvest their time and talents by placing them in various non-profit agencies.
